As part of the 2016 renovations of the historic Empress Hotel, Turner Restorations was commissioned to repair and refinish a few of its most impressive and iconic antiques.
Empress Hotel
Being used and displayed in the high traffic areas of the lobby and the dining room, these beautiful pieces were more than a little worse for wear. With several pieces of moulding, finials and fretwork long absent, the task of replicating and replacing them was at hand.

As well as having to do several structural repairs, extensive surface repairs were also necessary. Deep gouges, scratches, dents and dings were filled, veneer was patched or re-glued, and missing fretwork was tediously filled in and carved to match.

Before applying the final finish a variety of different products are used to ‘touch up’ the repairs. The new wood and fills are skillfully coloured and grained to seamlessly blend in with the age and patina of the beautiful rosewood.

This impressive and regal piece, with all its missing pieces replicated, and repairs complete is once again in displayed in the Hotels lower lobby.

Repairs, touch-ups and finishing complete, this elegant sideboard now sits in the famous Empress Hotels most prestigious suite.

Norm, a buyer and seller of lovely old collectible high end pianos, found one that was so beautiful and unique that he could not let it go. He had to keep it for himself but it needed much work.
Norm’s Piano
The original finish was in very rough shape and needed to be stripped of its dark, muddy varnish and refinished so as to integrated well with Norms much lighter mahogany dining suite.
Norm’s Piano
The first step was to disassemble the entire piano in preparation for the job ahead, a time consuming task but one necessary to approach a piece of this scale and detail.
Norm’s Piano
Once all the individual piano pieces were stripped it was gently scrubbed with a special solution in order to pull out as much of the old dark stain as possible.
Norm’s Piano
Next an oil based clear stain is applied to add to the protection of the wood and bring out the gorgeous mahogany grain. This is where the piano starts to reveal it’s true beauty.
Norm’s Piano
Sanded, grain filled, sealed, and finished with a durable and water resistant satin lacquer, the final steps are completed and the piano is close to being ready to be reassembled.

A customer recently purchased a new home and wanted to update the kitchen as efficiently and economically as possible, as is common with a new house purchase.
Deeth Kitchen
Turner Restorations was contracted to do a complete refinish of the kitchen cabinets. Step one, remove everything that can be taken away and done in the shop.
Deeth Kitchen
After covering up and protecting the floors, walls, counters and insides of the cabinets, we stripped off the existing finish. Then begins the task of sanding and repairs.
Deeth Kitchen
And now the transformation begins! Staining and protecting the wood and preparing it for the demands that come along with what is usually the most active room in the house.
Deeth Kitchen
And here we see the end result. This kitchen is finished with a durable, water resistant satin lacquer, and fitted with new pulls and hinges to match the appliances.
Deeth Kitchen
From tired old golden oak to a new durable finish in a stylish and contemporary colour. Our customers were thrilled with the look of their beautifully refinished kitchen!
